What is Fibre, And How Does it Work?

Fibre Optic Internet, more commonly known as Fibre, is a type of broadband connection capable of reaching speeds of up to 940 Megabits per second (Mbps), with a low lag time. Fibre makes use of Fibre-optic cables and light –which can send data as fast as approximately 70% the speed of light –now that's fast!

How does it work?

Essentially, the information you send and receive over the internet will be sent through in the form of light as opposed to electricity when you have a Fibre connection.

We don't sugarcoat, so you know you'll be getting the most accurate information from us to make your choice. But in our opinion? Fibre should be your preferred choice of internet connection if you’ve got the need for speed. Check out the pros and cons

Thumbs up

Pros of Fibre

  • High-speed connection

Fibre can reach download speeds of up to 1Gbps, meaning you can download a 2 hour movie in less than a minute!

  • Reliability

Because this connection uses light instead of electricity – rest assured that severe weather conditions, theft or lagging during peak time will be a thing of the past.

  • Multiple devices can connect

Due to its high-speed and reliability, you can have multiple users connected without affecting the quality of the line–we think that's pretty cool.

  • Better gameplay

This one's for all the gamers out there–Fibres considered the holy grail of internetconnections to gamers because of the previous three factors we mentioned. You no longer have to worry about the connection dipping during the most crucial moment of gameplay!

  • Safety

Because Fibre uses light instead of electricity, the connection can withstand the forces of severe weather conditions and theft.

  • No-throttling

Throttling occurs mostly during peak times for internet usage–this happens when your service provider lowers your internet speed to ration their service. Thankfully, this doesn't happen with a Fibre connection.

Cons of Fibre

  • Availability

Fibre is mostly available in urban areas and is slowly being introduced in other locations. Although there are plans in place to increase its availability across the country.

  • Physical damage

Fibre cables are thinner and lighter than copper cables –making it a more delicate system. Due to this, these cables can be easily cut during building renovations or rewiring.
